The Wim Hof Method helped me in my fight against illness when nothing else could.
The Wim Hof Method is a breathing technique developed by Wim Hof (also known as “The Iceman”) that requires a combination of breathing exercises, cold exposure, and commitment.Â
The benefits of this method can’t be understated. It’s helped me to reduce inflammation, improve mental clarity and focus, and make better decisions.
In this article, I’ll share my personal experience with the Wim Hof Method and how it’s helped me become more resilient against adversity.
I first heard about the Wim Hof Method during the pandemic.
I was living in a small apartment in Medellin, Colombia. I had developed a serious infection that started as a dental issue, but eventually spread to my sinuses and eroded some of the bone in my face.Â
With the overflow of hospitals at the peak of the pandemic, it was nearly impossible to get medical attention. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
At the recommendation of a friend, I found a breathing and cold exposure technique that could reduce inflammation and fight infections. Naturally, I was skeptical at first.Â
But, with limited resources available to me, I was ready to try anything.
I started practicing the Wim Hof Method religiously and combined it with meditation.Â
I did this every day for a year, and to my surprise, it worked. The method helped reduce inflammation in the infected area of my face, and over time, the infection subsided without the need for medication.
At this point, I was convinced.
I continued with the Wim Hof Method, and I began to notice more benefits beyond the physical ones. Over time, I became more resilient to stress and less reactive to stressful stimuli. I could feel myself improving in every aspect of my life.
I wasn’t the only one skeptical of this method at first.
In Poland, scientists wanted to determine whether or not Wim Hof could actually influence his immune and nervous systems. To test this, they injected him with endotoxin (a toxic substance produced by bacteria) which had a minimal negative effect on him.
This puzzled scientists, so they injected the toxin into 12 people trained by Wim Hof, and a control group of 12 people who hadn’t received any training. All 12 of Wim Hof’s students felt little effect from the toxin, while the control group reported shivers, muscle aches, and nausea.

The friend who introduced me to the method was one of Wim Hof’s 12 students. He taught me virtually throughout the pandemic, and we even had private sessions in person. Through this experience, we became closer, and I still attend his ice workshops in Medellin to this day.
Today, I practice a condensed version of the Wim Hof Method, which includes one round of breathwork, ten minutes of meditation, and one minute of gratitude.
I also start my day with a cold shower, which helps me feel invigorated and refreshed.
My personal experience with the Wim Hof Method has been transformational. It’s helped me become more resilient to stress and make better decisions.
The benefits of the Wim Hof Method may vary for each person, but I highly recommend giving it a try.
It might surprise you how much it can change your life for the better.
